Activity ideas for an artsy fifth grader?
I am mentoring a fifth grade girl. She is a bit shy, so she doesn't talk much, but I know that she LOVES art. Tomorrow we are using water colors, and last week we did a Valentine's Day craft. I am looking for eight more activities to do with her that will take around an hour, although we could always finish the next week. She is from an inner city school, so she hasn't had much experience with anything more than colored pencils, markers, and crayons. I have thought about cross stitch, painted glass, and oil pastels, but I am looking for more activities.

ttaylor:  i am taking an elementary art class right now because i want to be a teacher, and we just did an organic object drawing. we brought in some sort of organic object (fruits and veggies. apples, oranges, limes, lemons work well). then we put a lamp on the table and drew the object. we actually made 4 drawings with it. we first just drew the outline. then we traced the outline and added some shading to work on value. then we cut the object into 3 pieces and arranged them and drew that (value not just outline). finally, we created an abstract mixed media drawing. either of a part of our drawings zoomed in, or just another creative take on it. we used no color on this project, but i think it would be cool to add color to the abstract one. this may not be appropriate or what you were looking for, but i know that i am not good at art at all and i really enjoyed these projects. maybe this will give you some ideas. good luck :)

Marcie:  Find a bunch of magazines of diff types and let her make a collage. Give the collage a theme... like What I want in my life or something. Let the conversation that it brings up give the 2 of you a chance to get to know each other better. Go to the library or goggle "5th grade art activities"

twiggyngati:  Clay modelling is good fun. You could make sculptures then paint them afterwards. Painting eggs: Blowing them, painting them and then scratching out patterns....Easter is coming up. Papier mache Stenciling
